Madeline Stuart

About the Artist

Madeline Stuart is an emerging self-taught artist based on Awabakal Land in Newcastle, NSW. Since painting and creating from a young age, Madeline has made time for her art practice over the years while juggling working as a Radiographer, and becoming a mother of two. Having spent many years painting still life and wildlife, it was on return to Australia in 2020, after living and working in the UK, when Madeline rediscovered the unique and distinctive Australian landscape. She paid particular attention to the rich native flora and the interesting coastlines that Australia has to offer. It is this fascination that informs much of her current work, particularly the contrasting colours of the Australian bush and the blue hues of the ocean.

Initial mark making and deliberate brush strokes are a big part of Madeline's work, as is evident in the glimpses of underpainting and layers of paint seen on the canvas. Madeline's aim is to transport you to a familiar place with her work, inviting you to escape and discover a refuge in the environment and art.

Madeline is interested in exploring still life again, finding beauty in everyday objects.
